Osteoporosis is a concern that many of us have these days…. we are all trying to keep our bones strong , we pop our requisite Calcium/Magnesium supplements, drink milk, eat yogurt, eat dark leafy vegetables, maybe take hormone replacement, and do a lot of “vertical vector” weight-bearing exercise like walking. But yet, we still are worried that we might be hit by the dreaded drop in bone density. You need not just be a perimenopausal woman to lose your strong bones. A sedentary lifestyle, excess alcohol use, too many carbonated beverages can lower our bone density. Astronauts, with sustained periods of weightlessness are particularly susceptible. Have you seen all those TV commercials with Sally Field advertising that anti-osteoporosis drug Boniva? She talks about the genetics and hormone aspects of menopause but we all know that all of those weightless years as the flying nun must have been a major contributing factor to Fields risk for osteoporotic fractures. All humor aside, lower bone density is not a laughing matter, but it does appear that the health of our bones is related to how happy we are, the degree of stress that is in our lives, but most important, who we have to lean on as a family to make us feel safe and secure.
Osteoporosis, and other bone and joint problems is a 1st chakra problem. Depression, social isolation are independent risk factors for this dreaded health problem. So even if you take Osteoporosis medicine, take Calcium/magnesium supplements, walk to your hearts content, if you are depressed, isolated, always flying “solo” as they say, your bones are at risk.
This week’s Wednesday www.HayHouse.com Radio show is appropriately entitled, “Lean On Me, Osteoporosis, Bone Density, and the Mind-Body Connection”. And this week we have a very special treat. My very good friend and “family” Laura Day, with her new, very wonderful book, How to Rule The World From Your Couch, will join me. Together we will teach you, how to create lifelong strong, healthy family ties ( and strong bones), even if the ones you came into this world with weren’t the greatest.
And in this blog, please share with me, how you have struggled and possibly succeeded with osteoporosis and other bone problems.
